What really is a Family?


What is family? To some it is a feeling, to some a bond, to some a relationship and to some the entire life. A family can be best described as “a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence. In most societies, it is the principal institution for the socialization of children”. In simple words, family consists of people who look after us, play an essential role in upbringing us and teach us the lessons in life that can never be learned through any school or text book. For this reason, it is rightly said that knowing, understanding and learning the meaning and significance of a family becomes highly crucial. They constitute various members, wherein each of the member assimilates his/her responsibility of imbibing the true values of family in you, such as patience, care, understanding and commitment, thereby differentiating you from the rest. Our family brings out the best and worst in each of us. The environment where we get to understand our religion, values, culture, society and utilize them to the best while coping with the outside world. A family is the bond where you meet your parents, grandparents, siblings and other family members. Just by observing how these relationships blend with each other and understanding one another allows us to know the importance of a family. Be it happiness, stress, pressure, triumph, achievements or failure, your family is always there by your side at every nook of your life, standing tall and supportive. Remember the last time you went out for a family vacation or had a family reunion? Or even exchanged gifts with your family members on a festive occasion? Difficult to recall, right! While during childhood, these delicate bonds sound interesting and fascinating, but as we grow up and mature, family members become just like any other burden or fringes. But nonetheless, these are the relationships that help you cope up with your ups and downs in life. Mind it, those bubbly and greedy friends and loved ones are not going to lend you a shoulder in your tough times.

Identification

You are the product of your parents, who in turn, are the creation of their respective parents. Therefore, the values and actions that you reveal to the world outside identify you as a part of your family. Be it your day-to-day interactions, delivering of lectures, the way you walk, the way you portray yourself, all are simple indications of what culture, practices and customs you have embedded from your family members and ancestors. Gradually, you learn the undiscovered truths about your family heritage through the help of your oldest living relatives. All this is divulged to you by none other than your family. Right from bringing you to this world to bearing your studies, enrolling you in the best university to marrying you off to the most eligible person, your family has done more than delivering you the best pleasures of your life.

What important qualities do you think every family should have? We think a family should be accepting towards each other, and that there should always be understanding and support, during the hardest moments. Overall love and unity is what makes a family last forever.
