Yummy is Pure Honey.

The National Honey Board Announces “Pura Miel de Abeja”, a National Education Campaign with Mayte Prida to Identify 100% Pure Honey

FIRESTONE, CO. – In recent years, there has been an increase of imitation honey products in discount stores patronized by Hispanic consumers. These products cause confusion as the packaging looks like honey; however, the product may not be 100% pure honey. While consumers may feel they are getting a bottle of 100% pure honey, the reality is that they may be purchasing a product that is not the natural sweet substance produced by honey bees from the nectar of flowers. To help Latinos understand that sometimes there are imitation honeys that contain added ingredients, the National Honey Board has developed “Pura Miel de Abeja”, an educative program for identifying 100% pure honey by carefully reading the label to make sure it indicates 100% pure honey as the only ingredient.

TV host and journalist, Mayte Prida, one of the most prominent Hispanic advocates for women and wellness in the country today, joins the National Honey Board in its effort to educate consumers. “I am honored to be part of this initiative and to have the opportunity to educate Hispanic consumers as I am a strong supporter of good eating habits, including consuming a variety of natural foods in our diets such as 100% pure honey”.

The lack of language fluency, the confusing labels and containers that are similar to the real quality goods, trick many Hispanics into buying imitation products. In the case of honey, there are many imitation honeys that are blended with other ingredients. Consumers purchasing food items at retail and discount stores are unknowingly sacrificing quality when purchasing the misleading food products sold on the store shelves.

The “Pura Miel de Abeja” national campaign includes web-based educational videos, broadcast public service announcements and a comprehensive media tour by Prida. All vehicles will help Latinos recognize pure products by zeroing in on the following attributes:

Label terminology - Watch out for products that include the terms honey blend, honey flavored and/or honey syrup – they are NOT 100% pure honey.

Label ingredient - Honey is a completely natural ingredient. 100% pure honey does not contain any other ingredient - Honey is the only ingredient listed on the label of 100% pure honey.

Point of Purchase - Pure honey in this country is best bought from local and national grocery stores, warehouse or convenience stores and local farmer stands/markets.

Bruce Wolk, Director of Marketing for the National Honey Board, informs of the concernment of this public education campaign: “Honey is honey. Without any additional ingredients, 100% pure honey only contains honey as produced by bees. Through this program, Hispanics will learn the importance of reading the label and become informed consumers. This will also help them recognize and be alert of other imitation food products that frequently target Latinos in retail and discount stores.”
